What stays on your device
- Your playlists, liked songs, downloaded songs, listening history and stats.
- Your settings and looks.
- Your best Type along scores.
Meltify works without an account. Nothing in this list is sent to the Meltify website.
What the app asks other services for
To do its job the app talks to a few services directly from your device. They see the request the way any website sees a visitor (your internet address and what was asked for):
- Playlist services (Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, Deezer, eSound): the playlist links you import.
- YouTube and YouTube Music: searches, and the songs you download.
- Lyrics (NetEase Cloud Music and LRCLIB): the title and artist of the song you are playing.
- The Meltify website: a check for a new version, and the download when you update. The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which keeps ordinary visit logs. The site has no ads and no analytics scripts.
Signing in with Google (optional, computers)
If you choose to sign in, Meltify asks Google for two things:
- Your basic profile: name, email address and profile picture. The app shows your name and email in Settings so you can see which account is signed in. They are kept on your device and are not stored by the Meltify website.
- Meltify's own hidden folder in your Google Drive. Meltify can read and write only the files it put there. It cannot see, change or delete anything else in your Drive.
Meltify's use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Your Google data is not sold, not used for ads, and not shared with anyone.
The Type along world board
Sending a score to the world board needs a Google sign-in, so that one person is one player. When a score is sent, the app shows the website a short-lived proof from Google that you are signed in. The website checks the proof, reads only your Google account number from it, and does not keep the proof.
What the website keeps for a player:
- A scrambled form of the Google account number (it cannot be turned back into the number).
- The board name you typed. This is the only name other players see.
- Your scores: song title and artist, points, accuracy, speed, best run, grade and the time of the run.
It does not keep your email, your Google name or your picture.
Backup to Google Drive
A backup is one file with your playlists, likes and song list. It goes from your device straight into Meltify's hidden folder in your own Google Drive. It never passes through the Meltify website, and song files are not uploaded.
Listen together
When you open or join a room, the app keeps a line open to the Meltify website so everyone in the room stays on the same song at the same spot. No sound goes through it: every app plays its own copy of the song. No account is needed.
What the website holds while a room is open:
- The room's code and the host's name.
- The name each listener typed, for as long as they are connected.
- Which song is playing and where it is (title, artist and position).
It keeps no history of what was played. When the host ends the room, or has been gone for five minutes, everything about the room is removed.
The web player
The web player is Meltify in a browser tab. There is no account and no sign-in.
- Your library (playlists, likes, what you played and for how long, your Type along scores, your looks and a background picture if you add one) is kept in your browser's own storage on your device. It is not sent to the Meltify website. Clearing the browser's site data removes it.
- Searches, artist pages, playlist links and song lookups pass through the Meltify website, which asks YouTube Music, Spotify, Apple Music or Deezer and hands the answer back. They are not stored and not tied to you. Cloudflare may keep an answer for a short while so the same question is quicker for the next person.
- The music plays in YouTube's own embedded player, loaded from youtube.com. YouTube sees that play the way it sees any embedded video and may set its own cookies and show ads; Google's privacy policy covers that part.
- Lyrics: the title and artist of the song are sent to LRCLIB from your browser, and to NetEase Cloud Music through the Meltify website.
- Listen together works as described above. The web player shows the Type along world board but does not send scores to it.
- Taste links (Melt with a friend) carry your most played songs inside the link itself, like in the app.
- Your own music files: a file you add is copied into your browser's own storage on your device so it plays next time. It is never uploaded. Removing the song removes the copy.
Other optional connections
- Last.fm: if you connect it, the title, artist, album and time of the songs you play are sent to your Last.fm profile. Disconnect in Settings to stop.
- Discord status: if it is on, the song you are playing is handed to the Discord app on the same computer, which shows it on your profile. Turn it off in Settings.
- Spotify account: if you connect your own Spotify app keys, Meltify can read your private playlists to import them. The keys and the sign-in stay on your device.
- Taste links and playlist links: everything they contain is inside the link itself. Nothing is stored on a server.
- Moving a library over Wi-Fi: the two devices talk to each other directly on your own network.
Children
Meltify is not aimed at children under 13, and the world board should not be used by them.
